They will be repeating an activity over and over again, which if not properly understood can be unnerving to adults. Often referred to as “developmental milestones”, Maria Montessori called these stages in a child’s life their Sensitive Periods.ĭuring these Sensitive Periods, a child will be seen intently concentrating on one aspect of their environment without much interest in the rest. Parents, teachers and caregivers all understand that there are certain times in a child’s life when they seem especially ready to learn a new skill. They love to have the opportunity to explore their environment with all of their senses and to figure out new ways in which they can impact it. If you have ever noticed that moment when a child finally masters a skill that they’ve been working intently on, you have seen a little face light up with pride and joy that no doubt made you smile.
